ARISE SIR PAUL!
You’re a fantastic, plastic Macca!
Further information about: Paul McCartney
Sir James Paul McCartney was born June 18, 1942. Hardworking and prolific, he has been listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the most successful composer in popular music history.
One of Paul’s most famous Beatle songs, ‘Yesterday’, is the most recorded song of all time and has been covered by Elvis and Frank Sinatra. It was composed under the working title, ‘Scrambled Eggs’ and he claims the melody came to him in a dream.
In the early Beatles' years, Paul was extremely popular with the ladies and often labelled the ‘favourite’ Beatle. During his long engagement to Jane Asher the couple were regularly snapped driving around in their Aston Martin.
In 1969 Paul married the American photographer, Linda Eastman. Since then Paul has been well known as a dedicated family man. Paul and Linda had three children together, Mary, Stella and James. Paul also adopted Linda’s daughter from her first marriage, Heather. The couple shared a love of the countryside, spending much of their time on a remote farm in Scotland away from the hassles of mega-stardom.
Paul famously insisted that Linda join his band Wings so that they could tour together. The couple were animal-rights activists and vegetarians, with Linda even launching a range of veggie foods. Tragically, Linda died of breast cancer in 1998. Paul and Linda were thought to have spent only a week apart in the whole of their marriage.
McCartney’s post-Beatle career has been diverse and wide-ranging. As well as the success of Wings with classics like ‘Live and Let Die’ and ‘Maybe I’m Amazed’, he has had numerous solo albums and collaborative hits including ‘Say, Say, Say’ with Michael Jackson and ‘Pipes of Peace’ with Stevie Wonder. He has also undertaken several sell-out world tours.
Paul also dabbled in the film industry, writing and starring in ‘Give My Regards to Broad Street’, as well as making cameo appearances in a number of films - mainly as himself. He has also shown an interest in animation with the 1984 hit ‘We All Stand Together’ earning a BAFTA for its feature length video starring Rupert the Bear and a cast of singing frogs. It has recently been featured on a DVD of animated shorts which includes his latest creation, Wirral the Squirrel in ‘Tropical Island Hum’.
Paul has written two major classical pieces, ‘Liverpool Oratorio’ and ‘Standing Stone’. He is also the lead patron of Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts - this dream project saw the transformation of his old derelict school into a fame academy for talented performers to perfect their craft.
In 2002 the Walker Art Gallery hosted a major exhibition of Paul McCartney paintings. Later that year, Paul married former model and anti-landmines campaigner Heather Mills. They separated in 2006. Their daughter Beatrice Milly is the latest addition to the McCartney clan.
Paul has recently finished his latest album, ‘Chaos and Creation In The Backyard’ - including the song, ‘Friends To Go’ which he says was inspired by George Harrison.

| I'm GEORGE !
BY GEORGE! You’re a Hare Krishna Harrison! Further information about: George Harrison
George Harrison was born 25 February 1943. An accomplished, innovative guitarist and songwriter, he was heavily influenced by Indian culture and philosophy. This had a major impact on George’s life, and indeed his music.
George was the youngest of The Beatles, and was often portrayed as the ‘quiet one’ - introspective and spiritual. In reality, he was a multifaceted and extremely involved individual who lived life to the full and pursued his interests with great verve.
As a boy Harrison developed an interest in fast bikes and cars, attending his first Formula One Grand Prix at Aintree, Liverpool in 1955. His first car was a Ford Anglia, which he later traded for an E-type Jaguar. He pursued his passion for cars throughout his life, and could often be seen at the races with the Formula One teams and ace drivers such as Damon Hill. He even owned a McLaren F1 supercar!
In the early Beatle years, George’s song writing talents were largely overshadowed by Lennon and McCartney, but he went on to write some of The Beatles finest and most memorable records. These included ‘Here Comes the Sun’ and ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps’.
George’s landmark song, ‘Something’ was inspired by his first wife Patti Boyd. He married the model in 1966 after meeting her on the film set for ‘A Hard Day’s Night’. She later left him for his great friend Eric Clapton who dedicated the song Layla to her. George and Eric remained friends and went on to call themselves ‘husbands-in-law’.
In 1965 George met the master sitar player Ravi Shankar. This marked a major catalyst in Harrison’s life. He learnt to play the sitar - featured on The Beatles’ ‘Norwegian Wood’ - and is largely credited with bringing Shankar and Indian influences into the British contemporary popular music scene.
Fascinated by all things Indian, Harrison became involved with Hinduism and meditation. This led to The Beatles’ audience with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi during a retreat in Wales. Although their association with the Maharishi was short lived, the Hare Krishna faith continued to inspire George throughout his life.
In 1971 Harrison organised Concert for Bangladesh - the first ever major charity concert which took place over 2 days at New York’s Madison Square Gardens. It was later released as a live album.
George remarried in 1978, to Olivia Trinidad Arias, the mother of their one month old son Dhani. They lived together at Friar Park in Henley-on-Thames, a sprawling gothic mansion designed by Victorian eccentric and botanist Sir Frank Crisp. George had a passion for horticulture and spent much of his home time cultivating the mansion’s famous gardens.
During the 80s, Harrison set up the film company Handmade Films, which produced the cult classics, ‘Withnail and I’, ‘Time Bandits’, ‘Mona Lisa’ and the Madonna film ‘Shanghai Surprise’. George greatly admired the Monty Python team, funding the controversial film, ‘The Life of Brian’ and taking the cameo role Mr Papadopolous.
Following the death of John Lennon, George stayed out of the public eye for some time. He did, however, make several surprise appearances at concerts, including one at the George Formby Fan Club’s annual convention at Blackpool’s Winter Gardens. He loved to play the ukulele.
On the recording front, George hooked up with friends Roy Orbison, Jeff Lynne, Bob Dylan and Tom Petty to form the Travelling Wilburys. They enjoyed both critical and commercial success.
The nineties were difficult for George as he battled cancer, having several growths removed. A crazed fan also broke into his home, stabbing George five times in the chest. Olivia and George fought him off and survived the attack. The intruder was later acquitted of attempted murder on the grounds of insanity.
Sadly, George died in November 2001 at the age of just 58. His last album, Brainwashed, was completed by fellow Wilbury Jeff Lynn of ELO fame and his son Dhani.

| Je suis Johnny TWIST AND SHOUT! You’re a radical slice of Lennon! Further information about: John Lennon John Winston Lennon was born October 9, 1940. Recently voted 8th in a BBC survey of the 100 Greatest Britons of all time, John was not only an inspirational songwriter but an author, a radical thinker, a political activist and artist. During his early Beatle years, John was portrayed as a loveable rogue with a cheeky sense of humour. At a Royal Variety Perfomance attended by the Queen, he memorably asked the audience, ‘Will the people in the cheap seats clap your hands? All the rest of you, if you’ll just rattle your jewellery’. Behind the scenes, Lennon was a much more restless and intense character. He secretly married his sweetheart Cynthia Powell in 1962 after she became pregnant with their son Julian. He was forced to keep them out of the limelight in case it affected the band’s popularity. As time went on, John became more outspoken, unintentionally invoking the fury of the US media with a comment about The Beatles being ‘more popular than Jesus’. This led to mass protests across the States, heralding the end of The Beatles’ wholesome image, and ultimately the end of their touring days. As John became disillusioned with the Beatle phenomenon, he looked for inspiration outside of his the band and his marriage to Cyn. He took on a film role as a cynical soldier called Gripweed in Richard Lester’s ‘How I Won the War’. He had previously flexed his intellectual muscles with the publication of his witty, illustrated books, ‘A Spaniard in the Works’ and ‘In His Own Write’. Laced with nonsense, double meanings and puns, John drew on his childhood literary influences such as Lewis Carroll’s, ‘Alice in Wonderland’. In 1966, John visited the Indica Gallery in London where Yoko Ono was hosting an art exhibition. They soon fell in love and later that year Cynthia filed for divorce. John’s devotion to Yoko is well documented. They married in 1969 and he changed his name to John Ono Lennon. However, John led this relationship in the full glare of the media and the couple had to endure intense criticism and cruelty. Yoko was even blamed for the break up of The Beatles. John insisted on taking her to all of their recording sessions, despite the band’s protests. John and Yoko’s alienation from the media was partly aggravated by their intense political stance and avant-garde art performances, including their honeymoon bed-in at a hotel in Amsterdam. Yoko’s John was a very different figure than the cheeky lad from Liverpool that the British public had previously revered. In reality, the couple did much for the peace movement, protesting against the Vietnam War, for women’s rights and racial harmony. John famously sent his MBE back to Buckingham Palace “in protest against Britain’s involvement in the Nigeria-Biafra thing and support of America in Vietnam, as well as Cold Turkey slipping down the charts.” In addition, John’s solo albums including songs like ‘Imagine’, ‘Give Peace A Chance’ and ‘Happy Xmas (War Is Over)’ contributed to the lasting perception of him as a peace icon. In 1975 Lennon’s second son, Sean was born. John retired from the public eye to concentrate on fatherhood, in stark contrast to Julian’s upbringing when John’s time had been monopolised by his career. It was five years later in 1980 before John started working on the album Double Fantasy. This collaborative effort with Yoko included some of the highlights of his solo career, such as ‘Woman’, ‘Watching the Wheels’ and ‘Just Like Starting Over.’ John’s life came to an untimely end in 1980 when he was murdered by deluded fan Marc Chapman outside his New York apartment in the Dakota building. Since his death, Lennon’s legacy and reputation has grown with memorabilia and Lennon- related merchandise still in great demand. In 1985, John’s legendary psychedelic Rolls-Royce Phantom V sold at auction for a record $2.3 million. As his work with the Beatles has been instrumental in attracting an enormous number of tourists to his home city every year it is fitting that the airport was recently renamed Liverpool John Lennon Airport in his honour. John Lennon continues to be one of the most influential and revered figures in popular music history | |
